I LET OUR DOG SLEEP NEXT TO OUR TODDLER, AND NOW MY PARTNER WONT SPEAK TO ME

Posted on July 1, 2025 By Erica m No Comments on I LET OUR DOG SLEEP NEXT TO OUR TODDLER, AND NOW MY PARTNER WONT SPEAK TO ME

Our dog Miso is the gentlest soul you’ll ever meet—a rescue Amstaff who startles at paper towels but transforms into the world’s softest cuddle buddy. So when our toddler Levi was overtired and inconsolable one night, I opened his nursery gate and called Miso into the room. She padded over and settled on the rug beside his crib, and Levi’s cries faded as he reached through the bars to stroke her velvet ears. In a moment of inspiration, I lifted Miso into the crib, where she curled up against him, her steady warmth lulling Levi into a deep, peaceful sleep—and soon, I drifted off watching my two favorite companions rest side by side.

But morning brought a harsh wake-up call. Salome, my partner, replayed the baby monitor footage with a coffee mug in hand, her face draining color. “You put a pit bull in the crib with our baby,” she said quietly. I rushed to explain that Miso had never shown aggression, that I’d stayed awake half the night vigilant, that Levi slept soundly—but Salome heard none of it. She packed a bag, took Levi, and left without another word.

Three days passed before I learned why my “helpful” gesture felt like betrayal. At Salome’s sister’s home, I discovered that when Salome was five, her family’s terrier bit her cousin. Her parents blamed the child instead of the dog, and no one offered an apology. She still remembers her aunt’s tears and the sudden shift in her sense of safety. Seeing Miso in Levi’s crib awakened that frightened child all over again: Not again.

When Salome finally agreed to meet at the park, we started the slow work of rebuilding trust. She explained what she needed—clear boundaries and shared decisions—while I listened without interruption. I admitted that my urge to “fix” things quickly had blinded me to the emotional weight she carried. In turn, she confessed that she needed reassurance I’d protect Levi as fiercely as she would, even when it meant inconvenience.

Now Miso naps just outside Levi’s door, curled on her own mat, close enough that his giggles still make her tail thump against the floor. I’ve learned that true safety isn’t only about physical precautions; it’s honoring the unspoken wounds we each carry and respecting the silent agreements we make as partners and parents. Sometimes the hardest lessons come wrapped in velvet ears—and a nighttime lullaby you never meant to risk.
