Dima Kalekin’s story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and triumph. Born with hydrocephalus, or “water on the brain,” his life began with unimaginable challenges. When his biological parents first saw him, they made a devastating decision—they left the hospital without him and never looked back.
Dima spent his early years in an orphanage for children with disabilities. By the time he was four, he still couldn’t walk or eat with utensils, and the staff doubted he would ever develop normally. Despite their concerns, Dima showed an incredible will to survive, surprising everyone by learning a few words and clinging to life against the odds.
In 2014, Dima faced a new danger when conflict erupted in the region. The orphanage he lived in was caught in a contested area, forcing the staff and children to evacuate. For a harrowing week, they wandered from place to place without food, water, or medicine. Finally, a group of people intervened, helping the children reach safety.
Dima was taken to a hospital, where the toll of his journey became heartbreakingly clear. The doctors feared he wouldn’t survive much longer. In desperation, they reached out to a local priest, asking him to pray for a family willing to adopt Dima.
Miraculously, those prayers were answered. Dima was moved to a new orphanage, and shortly after, a couple named Ernest and Ruth Chaves arrived. Experienced adoptive parents with seven children already, they were moved by the plight of children affected by the conflict. When they met Dima, they knew immediately that he was meant to be part of their family.
Renamed Zebadiah Chaves, Dima’s life transformed completely. In his new home, surrounded by love and care, he began to thrive. Just days after arriving, Zebadiah surprised his parents by eating with a spoon for the first time. Over the next year, he made incredible progress—learning to walk, speak both Ukrainian and English, and embrace his new family.
Doctors in his new home examined Zebadiah’s condition and were astonished by his resilience. Despite the challenges of hydrocephalus, his brain had not suffered significant damage, and his potential for development looked promising. Though he faced future surgeries, Zebadiah proved time and again that his spirit was unbreakable.
Today, Zebadiah is a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and second chances. He has grown into a happy, thriving young boy, far removed from the dire circumstances of his early years. His journey inspires all who hear it—a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can change a life forever.
